Howan cottage is a newly renovated, traditional stone built cottage set within its own enclosed garden. It is situated at Howan, a working beef and sheep farm in Orkney’s West Mainland owned and run by the Flett family.

The Flett family have farmed at Howan since 1929 and are now fourth generation farmers with a fifth generation waiting in the wings. The farm and Howan cottage is owned and run by Raymond and his wife Yvonne alongside their son Scott and his wife Fiona.

The cottage renovations were completed in 2019 and after a long three year project, we are pleased with the end result and we hope our guests are too. We aimed to keep its original charm on the outside and on the inside have created a relaxing, stylish and cosy space, a home from home. It has been thoughtfully equipped for modern day living, all the time trying to retain its original character where possible.

The cottage is conveniently located within one mile of the peaceful village of Dounby which boasts many amenities. These include an ASDA supermarket, butcher, post office, hair dressers, doctor’s surgery, local craft shop, pharmacy, Play Park and community centre/gym. We are only 9 miles from the town of Stromness and 13 miles from the City of Kirkwall.

Howan cottage is an ideal base to explore Orkney’s natural and cultural heritage, wildlife, local arts & crafts and enjoy the local food and drink.
